5 News of March 11th in Electronics Industry

2024-03-14

1. Huawei Tops China's Innovators, Ranks 7th Globally

Clarivate recently released its "Global Top 100 Innovators 2024" report, with Huawei leading among Chinese firms and ranking 7th globally. Samsung Electronics from South Korea tops the chart, followed by Japanese companies Canon, Honda, Toyota, and Seiko Epson. LG Chem from South Korea ranks 6th.

This marks Huawei's eighth consecutive year on the list, now securing the 7th spot globally and 1st in China. BOE, also from China, ranks 12th, making it the only semiconductor display company in the global top 20.

Japan leads with 38 companies, followed by the United States with 17, and mainland China with 5. These include Huawei, BOE, Tencent, Ant Group, and AAC Technologies.

Huawei's third-quarter report shows its R&D expenses for the first three quarters of 2023 reached 114.991 billion yuan, accounting for 25.4% of the revenue. Its cumulative R&D expenditure exceeds 977.3 billion yuan over the past decade.

According to the "2023 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard," Huawei's R&D investment of 20.925 billion euros ranks 5th globally, making it the company with the highest research investment in China.

2. 116 million in-car embedded voice assistants to be shipped by 2033

It is expected that by 2024, global automotive manufacturers will extensively embed cellular connectivity, with new vehicle shipments expected to reach 50.62 million units. This reflects the strong global demand for connected cars and also requires manufacturers to explore new revenue streams. To meet consumer demands, manufacturers will expand functionalities through value-added services such as embedded voice assistants (VAs), on-demand payments, app store payments, and in-vehicle commerce. ABI Research predicts that by 2024, global shipments of embedded VAs will reach 116 million units, with a compound annual growth rate of 24.4%. Additionally, global connected car subscriptions will surpass 300 million for the first time, with the majority being embedded consumer remote information processing subscriptions. Consumer remote information services and infotainment subscriptions will become the main sources of revenue. To achieve this, manufacturers will offer more immersive experiences such as video-on-demand and gaming functionalities. These developments are crucial for the expansion of the global market.

3. AI and ML are increasingly used in industrial cybersecurity

AI and ML are increasingly pivotal in industrial network security innovation, notably in monitoring and visibility solutions, mitigating Operational Technology (OT) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) risks. Geopolitical tensions exacerbate the growing network vulnerabilities in critical industrial infrastructure. ABI Research projects OT and IoT network security spending in the industrial sector to hit nearly $4.6 billion by 2027.

According to Michael Amiri, ABI Research's Senior Industrial and IoT Network Security Analyst, the sector is witnessing the rollout of updated products like advanced firewalls for rugged environments and segmentation tech ensuring unidirectional data flow. Key players like Claroty, Otorio, Palo Alto Networks, and Dragos are enhancing capabilities using ML and AI for real-time monitoring and visibility into industrial networks.

Amiri underscores the significance of real-time data analysis, now accessible due to digitization, for improved decision-making. Industrial security providers increasingly leverage ML and AI, realizing their pivotal role in comprehensive OT/ICS network strategies. These algorithms excel in detecting network traffic anomalies and threats, outperforming traditional rule-based security methods.

4. Revenue of the worlds top ten wafer foundries increased by 7.9% quarterly in 2023Q4

In Q4 2023, the top ten global wafer foundries saw a 7.9% revenue increase, reaching $30.49 billion. This growth was driven by smartphone component demand and Apple's new device shipments, especially for components like A17 main chips and OLED DDI. TSMC's 3nm process significantly boosted its market share to over 60%.

Despite an industry-wide downturn, with a 13.6% year-on-year revenue decrease to $111.54 billion, 2024 holds promise for recovery. The industry is projected to grow by 12%, reaching $125.24 billion, driven by AI-related demand. TSMC is expected to outperform, fueled by orders for advanced processes.

The top five wafer foundries now hold 88.8% market share, with TSMC dominating over 60%. TSMC saw a 14% quarterly revenue increase in Q4, reaching $19.66 billion, fueled by demand for smartphone and laptop components, and AI-related HPC.

Samsung's wafer foundry revenue decreased by 1.9% to $3.62 billion due to sluggish orders for smartphone components. GlobalFoundries saw a modest 5% quarterly increase, while UMC and SMIC experienced slight declines.

Changes in rankings were observed, with Powerchip and Nexchip rising to eighth and ninth places respectively, while VIS fell to tenth. IFS lost its top ten status due to various factors including CPU product transitions.

Overall, despite challenges, the wafer foundry industry anticipates growth driven by AI demand.

5. Apple's R1 chip uses TSMC fan-out packaging technology

Apple's new product, Apple Vision Pro, features the M2 processor and the innovative R1 chip, employing TSMC's fan-out packaging technology. This allows the R1 chip to efficiently handle large amounts of visual data both internally and around the headset. With a central processor and two storage chips internally, the packaging includes eight dummy chips to optimize performance and efficiency. This packaging technology, in line with TSMC's InFO-M, showcases its leading position.

Touted as offering a "spatial computing" experience, Vision Pro marks Apple's debut in the augmented reality (AR) hardware domain. It seamlessly integrates information and functionality into the real world through digital overlays. With the M2 processor and R1 chip, Vision Pro promises a smoother, more immersive AR experience. This launch further cements Apple's leadership in innovation, enriching users' digital experiences.
